Last night saw the crowning of two new Section V champions at Webster Schroeder.

Class B

In the first match, the Saints of Churchville Chili Swept Midlakes to take the Crown. After taking a 14-4 lead in the first set the Saints refused to take their foot on the gas. Churchville setter and Roc City setter had this to say after the game.

“We knew that they were going to be a scrappy team, so we had to see the ball hit the floor,” Wollke said. “They knew that we were scrappy, so it was just a battle, a battle of endurance and a battle of who wanted to put it away.”

-Roc City & Churchville Chili Setter, Junior, Joe Wollke

Churchville Chili Coach Kim Eichas has seen her program come a long way since coming on board in 2015. She inherited a team that had gone 4-16 in the previous year. Each year she seeing improvement year over year until this year she became the first woman to claim a Boy’s Sectional Championship since 1999.

Along with Setter Joe Wollke Churchville Chili junior Griffin Stella, Brighton’s Matt Falter, Spencerport’s Nathan Hueber, Pavilion/York’s Luke Milligan, Canandaigua’s Jed Sliwka, Midlake’s Brandon MacDonnell and Josh Delgado.

Class A

In the Class A championship clash, two heavyweights duked it out for the crown. The (1) Fairport Red Raiders came out on top over the (2) McQuaid Jesuits. Fairport took the match in four games over McQuaid to claim their first title since 2013. Fairport has gone 20-0 this season in what has been an impressive showing of force. Fairport is led by Senior Ryan Parker who was named Sectional tournament MVP with his 23 kills in the finals match. Fairport had a tough road to the finals after taking on Two-time defending state champion Penfield.

“I think it’s very significant because as the No. 1 seed you always hope to have an easy road to the finals,”

“But to be able to beat the two-time defending state champion and then beat McQuaid, another powerhouse in Section V, I think it’s really a statement of how great we are this year.”

The all-tournament team also included Penfield’s Josh Coan, Victor’s Adam Slavny, Leadership Academy/Northeast College Prep’s Roman Rivera, Webster’s Jack Willard, and McQuaid teammates Wickens and Darby.

Churchville Chili and Fairport will take on the winners of Section VI in the regional round of states.

Tryout Dates are set and we are ready to begin our season. Tryouts will be held on Monday, November 26th & Thursday, November 29th from 6:30-8:30 at the Main Street Armory. Prior to the first tryout, athletes must complete their WEVA/USAV registration, pay a 25$ tryout fee, and complete your Roc City Registration Form.

This year practices will be Mondays and Thursdays 6:30pm-8:30 pm at the Main Street Armory FOR ALL AGE GROUPS. Our plan this year was to accommodate families with multiple athletes at different age groups and give all members a more centralized convenient location in downtown Rochester. This will also give us the opportunity to practice more often because practices will not be held on Sundays the same day as most tournaments.

To keep everyone sharp between now and then Roc City will be holding open gym at Victor High School this Sunday from 10am-12pm, the cost is 10$ and will be collected when you sign-in. If you plan on attending please register here.

Hope to see everyone this Sunday
