On Sunday December 18th, Pace Bootlegger sponsored the kickoff tournament of the 2017 boys volleyball season. The 14’s tournament was held at Nazareth College and the 16’s and 18’s tournament was held at the Main Street Armory. RCVC was only able to send two teams to this small tournament. We sent a 14’s team and a 16’s team.
The 14’s team played their first match at 8am and after a shakey start they were able to come from behind and win their first set. They lost the second set but won the match on points. They then won both games of their second match but lost two close sets in their third match to a very polished LVC team that made it to finals. RCVC 14’s finished second in their pool, making it into gold playoffs, the first time in 3 years of this first tournament. Unfortunately they were swept in the first round of playoffs by Team Syrv from Syracuse. Considering the late start of our new club and that the Lockport and Syracuse teams having had more practices under their belt the 14’s did very well and this is a good start to the season. All the kids performed well and serving was a strong suit as many aces were had.
At the Armory the 16’s teams started off very strong. They went undefeated and came out first in their pool. Unfortunately they drew Pace 15-1’s as their first opponent in playoffs. A team that started the day a bit shakey, thus not coming out first in their pool, but was ranked 3rd in the nation as a 14’s team last year. RCVC 16’s fell to Pace 15-1’s in a close one.
